Proper care and maintenance are essential for extending the lifespan of your hosiery, whether you opt for nylon tights or sheer stockings. By following a few simple guidelines, you can keep your legwear looking its best for longer.
First and foremost, always check the care instructions provided by the manufacturer. Different types of stockings may require different methods of care, so it’s important to follow the specific guidelines. Typically, nylon tights can be machine-washed on a delicate cycle, whilst sheer stockings may need to be hand-washed to avoid snags or tears although as an alternative you can always pop your stockings inside a laundry wash bag and then machine wash them on a delicate cycle.
Secondly when washing your stockings, use a mild detergent and lukewarm water. Avoid using harsh chemicals or bleach, as they can damage the fabric. Gently agitate the stockings in the water, taking care not to twist or wring them.
Third, after washing, squeeze out any excess water and lay the stockings flat to dry. Avoid hanging them up, as this can cause stretching and distort the shape. If you’re in a hurry, you can gently roll the stockings in a clean towel to remove excess moisture before laying them flat.
When it comes to storage, keep your stockings away from rough or sharp objects that could snag the delicate fabric. Ideally, store them in a drawer or organiser specifically designed for stockings, so they stay protected and maintain their shape.
One final tip with stockings, if you damage or ladder one stocking, don’t throw the pair away, just the damaged one, and keep the good one as a spare. If you have another pair of stockings the same it then gives you a pair and a spare!
